A blurry moving object does not point to one single monitor problem. Sample-and-hold blur, slow pixel transitions, dark smearing, and aggressive overdrive can overlap but respond differently to settings.
Motion blur can exist even when pixel transitions are fast
Most modern displays hold each frame until the next one arrives. Your eyes track a moving object while the image remains fixed for that frame, producing perceived sample-and-hold blur. Higher refresh rates shorten each frame and can reduce this component when the content frame rate also keeps up.
This is different from a slow transition, where a pixel has not reached the new shade before the next frame. The result may look like a faint copy or a smeared trail behind the moving target.
Overdrive trades transition speed for overshoot risk
Monitor overdrive applies a stronger signal to move pixels toward a target value faster. A moderate setting can reduce a conventional trail. An aggressive setting can pass the target and create a bright or dark inverse trail, often called overshoot or inverse ghosting.
The best setting may change with refresh rate. A mode that looks clean at the monitor’s maximum rate can overshoot at a lower rate, which matters for variable-refresh gaming.
Compare settings with the same motion pattern
Use the monitor ghosting test and keep target speed, browser zoom, refresh rate, and viewing distance unchanged. Change only one overdrive setting at a time and compare the shape of the trail.
The visual response and overdrive test provides another controlled moving edge. Neither page can output a valid millisecond response time; that requires controlled measurement equipment and a defined transition method.
- A same-color faint copy suggests an incomplete transition.
- A bright or inverted halo suggests overshoot.
- Long dark trails on dark backgrounds are commonly described as dark smearing.
- Uniform softness without a distinct trail may be dominated by sample-and-hold blur.
Check frame delivery before blaming the panel
Stutter, duplicated frames, and uneven animation cadence can make motion look unclear even when pixel transitions are unchanged. Run the refresh rate test with other heavy tabs closed to check the cadence observed by the browser.
For games, also compare frame-rate stability, synchronization settings, and whether the window is on the intended monitor. A browser motion pattern is best used to compare settings on the same setup, not to rank unrelated displays by eye.
