How this test works
Smooth gradients make abrupt bands and tonal breaks easier to see.
- Prepare the display using the checklist below.
- Select Start test and allow fullscreen mode if your browser asks.
- Use the arrow keys, on-screen controls, or click the pattern to move through the test.
- Exit the runner and save a local observation if useful.
Before you begin
- Disable night light and color filters
- Use browser zoom at 100%
- Turn off dynamic picture modes
What to look for
- Abrupt vertical or horizontal bands
- Color shifts in neutral gray
- Crushed detail near black or white
Important: The browser, GPU, operating system, ICC profile, and content pipeline can all affect a gradient. This does not identify native panel bit depth.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I see bands?
Banding can come from the panel, image processing, limited bit depth, compression, or display settings.
Does this prove my display is 10-bit?
No. A browser gradient alone cannot verify the panel's native bit depth or complete signal path.
Should dithering be visible?
Some displays and GPUs use subtle dithering to smooth tones. It may be visible at close range.
